20 qualities of Nature
Ayurvedic philosophy rests on the pillar of ten pairs of opposing “qualities”.
These qualities can help us identify the nature of our food, herbs, speech, lifestyle, sleep, etc.
Similars Increase & Opposites Attract.
This means that a persons’ foods, herbs, drugs, activities, lifestyles, mental-states or environments will affect their entire psycho-somatic system.
We are sentient being. That means that we are sensitive or susceptible to whatever we consume or interact with.
“You are what you eat” applies to the qualities that we surround ourselves with and invite into our system.
For example: If a person who is concerned that they feel too heavy and is overweight eats a heavy meal, that will be increasing to the overall quality of heaviness.
Heavy (related to food):
Heavy can refer to the nature of more nutrient-dense foods.
Heavy foods can also mean foods had in a larger quantity.
A food can also be considered to be heavy if it takes a long time to digest.
Fried foods or foods rich with butter, cheese and cream can be considered heavy as well.
Foods that leave you feeling heavy and weighed-down after a meal are heavy by nature.
Heavy foods create heaviness of the body a.k.a. increased body weight.
Light (related to food):
Light foods can be more airy like puffed rice, popcorn, crackers, etc.
Eating a light meal can also refer to a meal which is smaller in quantity.
Foods that are generally heavy can be made lighter by smaller portions and use of the spices.
Foods that leave you feeling light and energetic after a meal are light by nature.
Light foods create lightness of the body a.k.a. decreased body weight.
